According to Zillow, a home with solar panels’ value is increased by 4.1% on average compared to similar homes with no solar panels. As energy shortages continue to be on the rise, this value is only expected to increase.

How Does Solar Work?

Solar energy may seem complex, but the process is actually relatively simple. It can be simplified into 5 simple steps:

1. Solar Panel Captures Solar Radiation

Solar panels are made of photovoltaic cells that convert solar radiation into direct current electricity (DC electricity). Since it is capturing the solar radiation, that means that the panels will be producing power even if it is cloudy or rainy.

 

2. Inverter Converts the Power

The DC electricity travels to an inverter where it is converted into alternating current electricity (AC electricity) so that it can be used in the home.

3. Power is Routed to and from Electrical Panel

The AC electricity is routed into the home's electric service panel where it can be re-routed to power your homes appliances and devices.

4. Power Sent Through Meter

The power passes through a meter so that energy production and consumption can be monitored and power discrepencies can be fixed. 

5. Power Discrepencies

If your system is producing extra power, that power can be re-routed back into the grid (you can potentially earn credit from your utility company) or to a battery where it can be stored for later use. If your system is underproducing, you will need to draw power from the grid or a generator.
